 Dear friends, today we’re having a summary lesson about the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. You have already read many texts in your books, had a lot of additional information about this country, its cities, main holidays, nature sights, and famous people.

Now we’ll play game “ Brain Ring” or everything about the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. For this purpose we need two teams. Each team consists of 9 players and a captain. Each team  has its own desk with a lamp on it. The teams will be given tasks. If the player knows the answer, the captain should turn on the lamp. Only then the player can answer. For each correct answer you will get 1 point. The jury will keep the score and define the winner. Good luck and let’s start.

England

1.     It is the largest and the richest country of Great Britain.

2.     The capital of the UK is London.

3.     But there are other large industrial cities, such as Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and  other famous and interesting cities such as York, Chester, Oxford, Cambridge.

Scotland

It is a country in the north of Great Britain. It is a part of the UK. It is divided into 3 natural regions: the Southern Uplands, the Central Lowlands and the Highlands and islands. Its  capital, Edinburgh, is well known for its castle. Glasgow is the industrial capital of this country. It is the third largest city in Great Britain. The typical products of this country are timber, whisky, salmon. Golf is its natural sport.

Wales

It is the country in the west of Great Britain. It is mainly a mountainous land with a chiefly agricultural economy and an industrial and coalmining area in the south. The landscape is beautiful.  Many English people move to this country they retire.

Northern Ireland

This country is still a park of the UK. It is made up of 6 countries. Its capital is Belfast. Belfast is also the most important port and commercial and industrial center. Its population is divided into 2 groups: the Protestants and the Catholics. The fightings between these 2 groups of the population continue to this day.

11.                    St. Andrew’s Day is regarded as Scotland’s national day. On this day some Scotsman wear a thistle in their buttonhole. As  a national emblem of Scotland, thistle apparently first used in the 15^th century as a symbol of defence. The  Order of the Thistle is one of the highest orders of knighthood. It was founded in 1687 and is mainly given to Scottish noblemen.

12.                    St. David’s Day is the church festival of St. David, a 6^th-century monk and bishop, the patron saint of Wales. The day is regarded as the national holiday of Wales, although it is an official bank holiday.
